[1/5] Nov 11, 2023; San Diego, California, USA; New Jersey/New York Gotham FC forward Esther Gonzalez (9) celebrates with teammates after scoring a goal against OL Reign in the first half in the NWSL Championship at Snapdragon Stadium. Gotham were denied twice in the 38th minute as Purce hit the left post and midfielder Delanie Sheehan hit the crossbar in rapid succession. Reign had the chance to take the lead as Lavelle tried a through ball but striker Jordyn Huitema was caught offside five minutes later. Reign were awarded a free kick and Gotham midfielder Nealy Martin was forced to put on the goalkeeper’s jersey, with her team out of substitutions. Martin's team mates leapt into the air to block Lavelle's kick and Gotham erupted in celebration as Reign's frantic final efforts went unrewarded.

Gotham was able to run out the clock and marked its first NWSL title with a wild celebration near midfield. The non-contact injury to Reign star Rapinoe took some of the wind out of the crowd at San Diego State's Snapdragon Stadium. Rapinoe broke toward Maitane Lopez of Gotham, who was dribbling outside the penalty area, and suddenly went down in the third minute. Rapinoe announced before this summer’s Women’s World Cup that she was stepping away from the game after a career that included two World Cup titles, an Olympic gold medal and an Olympic bronze. The field at Snapdragon appeared in better shape than it was on Sunday night, when the Reign beat the San Diego Wave to advance, some 24 hours after a home San Diego State football game.

Over the past week, at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Richardson has taken the transformation a step further. Online, her sometimes brash dismissal of other track athletes invited more scorn — particularly from supporters of the Jamaican team. But at the end of the day, I’ve always been with me.”Richardson is very vocal about issues facing track and field athletes. Richardson is very proud to be among prominent Black women athletes and fiercely celebrates Black womanhood. She said, wisely, after winning the 100-meter race that the most important cause she’s embracing is herself.

In "Barbie," Allan appears as a kind but lonely man who just wants to hang out with the Kens and Barbies. But in Mattel lore, Allan was actually married to Midge and had two children with the doll, despite him not interacting with her in the movie. A few months later, in early 1964, the toy company began producing a red-haired boyfriend for Midge, Allan Sherwood, named for Handler's son-in-law. "Allan shares wonderful adventures with Barbie and her friends," including going on double dates as Midge's partner with Barbie and Ken, a advert from 1964 proclaimed. Allan was the same size as Ken, meaning that he could share his clothes, as was the case with Barbie and Midge.

Before going to see “Barbie,” the doll collector Laura Maar had reservations. “By the second time, though, I really did love it,” said Maar, 49, a kindergarten teacher in Southern California. But collectors like Maar were fans of Barbie long before. I spoke with 10 collectors — many of whom showed up for our video interviews wearing hot pink Barbie merch with their dolls proudly on display — to find out: Did the film pass muster with this most demanding group of fans? “I was so pleased there were so many nods to longtime Barbie fans.”

Mattel's Midge doll may have failed in the 1960s because she was "less glamorous" than Barbie, Ruth Handler once said. A pregnant version of the doll, referenced in Greta Gerwig's movie, was pulled from Walmart in 2002. A TV advert said that Barbie, Midge, and Ken "go everywhere together," including sunbathing on the beach, playing tennis, and attending school. Mattel released a pregnant version of Midge in 2002. Walmart pulled the sets, with a spokesperson telling CNN at the time that customers "were not happy" with the pregnant doll.

Barbie’s pregnant sidekick, MidgePregnant Midge was featured in Mattel's Happy Family Barbie Collection that also included Alan (pictured here behind the stroller). Fast-forward to 2002, Mattel introduced a pregnant Midge doll, featuring a detachable baby bump with a toy baby inside. The Midge doll created ripples. Walmart (WMT) ended up pulling the pregnant Midge doll from its store shelves, citing customer complaints about the appropriateness of a “pregnant” doll. Still breathless after all these years, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” enters its fifth and final season, a marvel in many ways and—doing what? Will the show flash forward to show its title character evolving into a road-hardened comedy legend who is as brittle as her jokes? Or will she finally heed the advice of her in-laws, give up all this showbiz meshugas, attend to her children and make sure they don’t grow up to hate her, or go live on a kibbutz? Can’t really say. What one can say is that “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is a funny show, “funny” in the manner of two cannibals eating a clown.
